Barley Helps in Fertility

Fertility is the quality of being able to produce offspring through reproduction. Though the gift of child is a precious one, but many couples are deprived of it. Male and female infertility is a global major health problem. Medical definition for infertility is the inability of any couple having a pregnancy within 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse.

The World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledges nearly 15% of couples of childbearing ages worldwide suffer from infertility, with majority cases from developing countries. Nearly 30% of infertility factors are associated with males, about 40% with both males and females, and approximately 20–70% with females. Women, therefore, play more important roles in infertility. The primary causes of female infertility usually include ovulation disorders, fallopian tube problems, uterine lesions, and endometriosis; whereas males suffer from low counts, quality and mobility of sperms.

It is commonly reasoned that stress effects the chances of pregnancy; whereas a healthy mind and body is ready to concieve, but it is not always the truth. Happy healthy people often dont concieve, whereas people highly stressed in their life just wake up to find the “baby-surprise”. These un-explained reasons for fertility are hard to explain and constitute nearly 10% of overall cases.

Today, it is possible for couples to have children via various new therapies such as use of drugs (such as clomiphene and gonadotrophins), assisted reproductive technologies (ART) [such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intrauterine insemination (IUI)], egg and sperm donation, induction of ovulation etc. These have their success rates and have helped thousands globally, still their side-effects and costs are big deterrent. Hormone therapy, for example, can give rise to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) or mental illness.

Due to the negative effects of modern fertility treatment procedures, the tendency to use herbal medicines or supplements is increasing among women. Herbal medicine considered as suitable alternative to chemical medicines because of it the presence of various compounds with phytoestrogenic, antioxidant, and nutritional effects.

Female fertility: Natural products like Dates, Pomegranate, Chamomile, Verbenaceae, Ashwagandha, etc have been used globally by women to cure their fertility related issues. These products are rich in micronutrients such as antioxidants, vitamins-Bs, minerals, vitamin D, and fatty acids, etc that provide proper nutritional conditions to regulate ovulation, implantation, uterine embryo tolerance, and fetal maturity. Also, they keep body free from infections, inflammations and promotes over-all well being.

Male fertility: Similiar natural products can be beneficial to males too. Antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, etc promote an over-all good health keeping inflammations and stress away. Selenium, zinc, lycophene, vitamin B1, etc have shown good effects on sperm counts and mobility.

Barley grass is rich in:

1. Vitamin B1 (Thiamine): Effects quality of sperm and egg,
2. Vitamin B9 (Folate or folacin): Needed for overall health. In pregnant woman, it supports the growth of the placenta and helps to prevent several types of birth defects, especially those of the brain and spine.
3. Copper: It is needed in trace amounts, but has to be sourced from outside as body doesnot make it. Combined with iron it enables the body to form red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body as well as helping with wound healing.
4. Phosphorus: It is essential in our diet and particularly in children when growth and development occurs most.
5. Manganese: It is a powerful antioxidant which neutralises the damaging particles of free radicals.
6. Selenium: It is important for sperm quality and mobility. It also play part in thyroid health, which is important for general health, fertility health and future pregnancy.

Some important findings:

1. Researchers have repoted that regular consumption of selenium increased fertility in men who had been infertile for one year or longer. The study analyzed 690 infertile men who were given a combination of selenium and vitamin E for 100 days. 52% of participants experienced total improvement in sperm motility and 10% provided spontaneous pregnancies compared to those who did not receive any selenium.

2. A study was conducted to investigate the effect of date fruit on the reproductive process of female rats. Results showed that there was a significant improvement in hormonal regulation, strengthening of oocytes, and pregnancy. Moreover, concomitant supplementation of barley and date fruit to the hypercholesterolemic mice group revealed remarkable improvement in ovarian function and structure.
